SketchUp Assignment #1

The Digital 2D Floorplan

Phases 1- 7 (completed)

This is what our completed floorplan will look like.

Phase 1

As per our course syllabus, we are starting our 2D floorplan in SketchUp Pro. We will start with creating our external walls for the building that will contain our store. There are other considerations we must factor into our process so that we draw in an optimal fashion - that is to say a fashion that facilitates success. This is a great exercise for learning drawing methods and techniques we can use in our 3D projects as well.

Phase one of the project will see us applying those methods. So that we can draw professionally and to specification, we will also be establishing some tags and materials as a part of the methods and techniques. The brief 10 minute video below will guide us through creating our external walls.

Phase 2

Internal Walls

In Phase 1 we drew our walls 30' x 40', then we offset the rectangle that represents our walls 6". This makes those walls six inches in width. Our internal walls are going to be four inches in width. As our example image above shows, we will have 4 rooms inside of our rectangular structure; the main floor, the office, the restrooms and the storage area. We will be installing, (drawing) 3 external entryway doors and three internal doors. There are 6 windows for us to draw. We will then draw our "door arcs" that show the path of travel of our doors. In this Phase (2), we are going to draw the internal walls.

Phase 3

Drawing the Doors

In the previous phase of this drawing, we found that the process we have used to this point serves to facilitate a nice workflow. Creating the guide lines made it quite easy to accurately draw our internal walls. Of course, this has to do with having a "plan" to begin with, but drawing in this manner does make things easier, which equates to getting more done in a professional and "elegant" fashion. We will find that this next phase will go smoothly because of how we have managed our drawing to this point. The video instructions below will guide us through creating and rotating our doors.

Phase 5

Drawing the Door-Arcs

The door-arcs are meant to enable the viewer to visualize the path of travel of the doorway or window that the arc is drawn in relation to. This is shown in the image below and in the completed floorplan reference image at the top of this page and instruction.

There is a tool that is specific to this purpose. It is of course, the arc tool. The instructional video below will guide us through the completion of the best method for drawing the arcs. We will then "tag" them as we have the other "entities" in our model/drawing and then change the lines so that they are dotted. This will help to distinguish them for what they are.

Adding the Typed Designations

This is a part of the assignment that will require some decision making on your part. We are going to have to add the typed information relating to each floor area; the restroom, office, storage and main floor. In addition to this, we will add basic shapes that will represent display tables, cash register[s], fire extinguishers, and other essential elements. We will also add our name, major and the date of completion to this document. Please use the program of your choice. I recommend using Adobe Illustrator for this. However, Photoshop or InDesign will work great too. We could also conceivably use Microsoft Word for this or even Google Docs, but I like the degree of control over the text elements we are adding that the Adobe software gives us.

Please save or export as a .pdf and upload this document to the appropriate DropBox. Please access that DropBox via the class LMS (Learning Management System). Unfortunately, we cannot link to any course DropBox from here, or anywhere outside that system as it is a closed secure sytem.
